Wells, kiddos, we got some news: good and bad.

Let's start with the bad: we're wrapping up our clubnight for a while as we've all been busy bees! We will keep up the indiepop spirit with So Tough! So Cute! and shiny new cassette tape label Cool In A Crisis coming at ya this autumn. Keep a lookout for our future DJ gigs, more blogging, and pop action!

The Hardy Boys boys are returning to Buffalo Bar as part of a short tour to promote their new EP Under the Piccadilly Clock, released on Bubblegum Records. Don't forget to pick up a copy - we've been listening to the tracks non-stop! These pop heroes emerged 25 years ago, but have only learned of their cult statues when their single Wonderful Lie, became an eBay treasure, selling for some exorbitant amounts of £££.

Here are a few free treats from them, one old (lost in 1986 and never released) and a new one (available on the EP).

Phil Wilson is a founding member of the June Brides , whose mix of guitar pop with viola and trumpet formed a blueprint for many of the C86 bands that would follow. Following the end of the June Brides, Phil Wilson began a short solo career, releasing singles in the late '80s. He is now back after 25 years away from music. He will be playing a mix of June Brides, his solo singles, and tracks from the new album "God Bless Jim Kennedy", which will be released on Slumberland and Yesboyicecream Records in November.

Liechtenstein are one of the the most exiting bands around, being as they are three young women from Goteborg, Sweden who make brilliant music reminiscent of Dolly Mixture, Shop Assistants and the Modettes. They also run the brilliant record label and online shop Fraction Discs and have played with The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart and Comet Gain, among others.This band are truly special.

The Lovely Eggs were on of the highlights of last year's Indietracks, playing brilliantly wonky songs about accordions, falling of your bike and birds. Featuring ex members of legendary 90s band Angelica, The Lovely Eggs cook up a sound that veers from crunching guitar frenzy to whispery quiet bits. Look out too for the mighty Drumcycle!

Hotpants Romance is obviously one of the best band names of all time, and also happens sums up the band perfectly. A riot grrrl sonic assault a'la Huggy Bear or Bikini KIll done up to the nines in (you've guessed it) hotpants. Not to be missed.

Evans The Death are inspired by the likes of The Field MIce, The Wedding Present and The Sea Urchins. The make exquisite odd-pop some between Help Stamp Out Loneliness and The Arcade Fire and have just finished their GCSEs.

Fresh from touring the hell out of their Top 40 debut LP 'You Dig The Tunnel And I'll Hide The Soil' the band are sure to turn the Buffalo Bar into a strange and magical place for the evening.

We'll be playing some records this Saturday at the Save 6Music demo. Make sure you come down to show your support for the UK's best national radio station (and the only one likely to play any of the bands featured on this blog) and we'll see you down the front for 'Joy Division Oven Gloves.'

Here's the organisers spelling out exactly why you should attend:

"On Saturday 22nd May at 12pm, we will gather together outside Broadcasting House for a second time to protest against the closure of BBC 6Music.

We have lined up some fantastic live bands and speakers as well as as a stage and PA so you can see and hear everything perfectly! This demonstration of support for the staff of the BBC, musicians, and all connected with 6Music will mark the end of the consultation process.

What the BBC proposes is unacceptable. We believe BBC 6Music should retained as a station in it's own right - broadcasting 24 hours a day, hours a week, not a sister station to any other BBC station or lost altogether.

6Music is the only place that caters for our diverse tastes, giving us access to the BBC's rich musical archive and offering valuable exposure to new music that may not otherwise be heard on a national radio station. The DJs play music they are passionate about to an audience who are passionate about music.

Baby Honey says, 'YES' to 'Say No To Love.' (Mini-interview with The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart's Kip and Peggy)

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart release a new single, 'Say No To Love' on June the 8th. And it's a cracker, already sounding like the soundtrack to my summer. It pulls off that particularly POBPAH trick of sounding both profoundly melancholic and like the most life-affirming thing you've ever heard. So raise your skinny fists to heaven and get ready to embrace what singer Kip Berman describes as; "three chords, a fuzz pedal and lots of feelings."

Below Kip and Peggy from the band talk about the song in more detail, as well as hula-hoops, great bands and why Kip decided not to get 'Rock'n'Roll Forever' tattooed on his forearm.

It's so good to have The Pains back! Can you tell us a little more about the new single, 'Say No To Love?'

Kip: It's a song about a girl taking charge of her life, rejecting a guy who's pouring on sentiment in a way that overreaches reality. When you're young, it's so easy to get sucked into this hyper-adolescent idea of love, where it's more important than anything and used to justify and opiate the true sources of dissatisfaction in your life. But you have to go out in the world, live your life, do things and not define your life so explicitly in relation to someone else, especially when you're so young. It's about knowing you need to follow your dreams, not your heart.

You'll be spending June touring the states, do you actually have time to do anything other than write, record and tour at the moment? When can we expect to see you back in the UK?

Kip: I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing than playing music, so the fact that we get to do it nearly constantly is pretty amazing to me and something I'm really grateful for. I also believe there's something about the day in and day out dedication of being in a band that makes the music stronger-- knowing that you'll be playing your songs every night, you want them to be as perfect as you are capable of making them. It would be a nightmare Groundhog Day scenario if you woke up and were forced to perform something of little worth to new people every day. This last year of near constant touring has taught us the importance of making sure what we say, what we make is something we can say and live with and never feel shame or regret.

Peggy: I almost feel like I have too much free time at the moment! We haven't been on tour since February. I've been playing this video game called Peggle, and I got a Tivo. And I've been throwing epic 90s dance parties. We'll be back to the UK in July, it's been wayyyy too long.

Kip: Yeah, we'll be back in the UK in July to play Latitude and Indietracks, but aside from a show in London and Brighton, we won't be playing any other dates around the country, as we'll be using some time over there to work on finishing up our new record. That being said, I'm sure we'll be previewing a few new songs in our set.

Ahh, Indietracks! Have you ever been before? It's like being inside an Enid Blyton novel (only with Indiepop and llamas.)

Peggy: I'm so psyched to be playing Indietracks! Even if the summer is long and boring and stupid, at least I have something to look forward to. I can't wait to see the Pooh Sticks and White Town and the Primitives and Veronica Falls and lots of other bands and hang out with our friends from all over the world. It sounds legendary.

Kip: I've wanted to attend Indietracks desperately since 2007. It's a festival that truly celebrates the kind of bands that exhibit the values and spirit of music I love most. We've even tried to play in the past, but the scheduling and distance was too difficult for us to make it over. I am grateful this year we'll get to do it, and it's a massive honor to be headlining the festival. Last year Teenage Fanclub played, and they're such a tremendous influence to us. Plus, so many of our favourite bands are playing like Blanche Hudson Weekend, Love is All, Shrag, Veronica Falls, and our labelmates on Fortuna Pop, Allo Darlin.

And can we assume that this single means a new LP is on the horizon?

Kip: We're heading into the studio to start working on some demos this weekend, and then we'll start recording in earnest in late June and early July. It's hard to speak of something that doesn't yet exist, but we're all really excited about the opportunity to record the new songs we've written. I think the most important thing to us has always been good songs, so while we'll take care to make things sound the way we want as best we can, the focus will remain on the songs. In many ways it'll be no different than how we mentally approached the first record, but I know we'll have a bit more time and opportunity to fully realize the sound we want.

What have you been listening to recently?

Peggy: Right now I'm obsessed with the Strawberry Switchblade song, 'Vicious.' But in other news, I've been into Fergus & Geronimo, The Drums, Twin Sister. And umm, lately I've been into Blake Babies.

Kip: The Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream album, The Prids yet-to-be-released Chronosynclastic (they're old friends of mine and gave me a sneak peek), The Slumberland re-issue of Chin Chin's Sound of the Westway, Titus Andronicus' The Monitor, The Depreciation Guild's Spirit Youth, The Secret History's The World That Never Was, the most recent Black Tambourine re-issue and some minimal wave re-issue compilations on, perfectly enough, Minimal Wave Records.

As for the Titus Andronicus record, to me it's a perfect example of a band that looked inward and became even more of themselves. I loved their first record, but this new one seems like they pushed the boundaries of that record and became even more Titus Andronicus, if that makes sense. It's sprawling, unabashedly lyrical, smart, heroicly self-depracating, yet self affirming, and most importantly emotionally sincere. Its scale is epic. There are no singles, but it is not delberately difficult-- it is difficult because that's what it needs to be to express itself perfectly. There is an honesty, a true genius in Patrick Stickles songwriting that makes me hang on every word.

Tell us a secret.

Kip: I like watching (American) Football and eating Nachos.

Peggy: I'll just say, "Ask me about my hula hoop."

Do you have any tattoos?

Peggy: NOPE. But I have 3 piercings in each ear.

Kip: No, in fact no one in The Pains of Being Pure at Heart has any. When I was a lot younger and in school, I wanted to get "Rock'n'Roll Forever" tattooed on my arm. I still believe in the spirit behind that wish, but am glad I expressed it a different way.

If I got a tattoo today it would probably say, "Mom (sorry)."

Tender Trap: Girls With Guns (Fortuna Pop! free download)

The current incarnation of Tender Trap are probably my favourite line-up the band have ever had. The recruitment of Elizabeth Darling and Katrina Dixon seems to have granted a new creative lease of life, and last year's 'Fireworks' was probably their best work to date. So it's great news that the band are releasing a new LP in the summer. To celebrate record company types Fortuna Pop! have made this track available for free download. Come one, come all to Baby Honey #005. This month we're over the moon to present a living, breathing legendary art-punk, bohemian and ex-postman genius in Mr Vic Godard and his Subway Sect, the great 'lost' band The Hardy Boys and young upstarts The Blood Oranges.

As ever we will play the very best in indiepop, post-punk, northern soul, and girl-groups for a clued-up and appreciative dancefloor 'til the wee small hours.

VIG GODARD & SUBWAY SECT

Malcolm McLaren eh? Whether you think the man was an iconoclastic visionary who bent pop culture to his own mighty will, or simply a scruffy looking bloke who hung around with the Sex Pistols, it's an incontrovertible fact that one small act of his at a Sex Pistols show in 1977, changed the face of Indiepop forever. Spying a young punk fan called Vic Napper in the audience with his pals, the impressario called them over and told them, "you lot look like a group - you should form one." They did. And the rest isnearly History.

Vic Napper, of course, became Vic Godard - and his pals The Subway Sect. Within two weeks of that fateful meeting they'd been recruited for the 100 Club punk festival alongside The Sex Pistols (and a nascent Siouxsie and the Banshees) and signed up for The Clash's infamous White Riot tour. Subway Sect went on to record the punk anthems 'Nobody's Scared' and 'Ambition' and then promptly split up during sessions for their intended debut LP.

Since then Vic has carved out a career of startling uniqueness. A huge influence on the likes of Orange Juice, The Television Personalities and The Jesus and Mary Chain (as well as pretty much every one of the original C-86 bands), he's re-invented himself by turns as a rockabilly rebel, big band leader, and swing balladeer; all the while maintaining a level of song-writing genius that would have most of today's bands spitting out their M-Cat in slack-jawed wonder.

In this special show Vic will perform mostly material from the Subway Sect's prime. Don't miss.

THE HARDY BOYS

Sometimes pop music is just about being in the right place at the right time. Greenock in 1985 wasn't it. Sometimes it doesn't matter how good you are, how you pour your heart and soul into your songs. Sometimes pop music is just happening somewhere else. But then, thankfully, sometimes people come round. Sometimes it takes a new decade, heck, a new century for pop music to realise that you'd been great all along. As good, if not, better than Aztec Camera or Blue Aeroplanes, or whoever all the young turks seem to be name-checking in interviews these days. The Hardy Boys for instance, only learned of their 21st century cult status when a friend alerted them to the fact that their 'Wonderful Lie' single was changing hands for exorbitant amounts on ebay. So now; London in 2010. Blogs are being written, anthologies compiled, gigs booked. Sometimes the right time and the right place are 400 miles away and 25 years in the future.

Blood Oranges are four Leeds University students aged 20, 20, 20 and 21 and make sparkling boy/girl pop music with hanclaps and stylophone. Sounding like a more relaxed Los Campesinos!, they've recently signed to Dance To The Radio and are about to support The Primitives!

Dum Dum Girls: Jail La La (Sub Pop free download)

Not a new single alas, but a re-recorded and cleaned-up version of a cracker from back before Dee Dee signed for Sub Pop and hooked up with super-producer Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, Go-Gos). While it's nice that the song has been pared back to the extent that you can now actually hear the lyrics, and it's undeniable that this version sounds a lot more likely to become a proper P!O!P! hit, I can't help but miss the echo-chamber reverb and scree of the original. Still a great tune though. Download for free here.

A Smile And A Ribbon: Den Lille Havfrue (Cloudberry 7")

A plaintive harpsichord* intro that sounds not unlike the beginning of the very song from which ASAAR take their name kicks off this beautifully wobbly ballad. Indebted to fifties doo-wop, early rock'n'roll and (as always) sixties girl groups, 'Den Lille Havfrue' is full of talky breakdowns, marimba, and slightly off-key backing vocals. Frances Gibson from the legendary Cannanes here takes time out from her incredibly busy schedule to answer some questions exclusively for Baby Honey!

It's such a treat to have The Cannanes back! And with a new single and British shows too! I'm very excited about the forthcoming split with (Baby Honey favourites) Summer Cats and Soft Paw in particular. Can you tell us a little about how that single came about and what will be on it?

Well the song is called 'Truth B2031A.' It’s a little bit about bushfires as they were much on our mind at the time as 50 houses burnt down where we live and 173 people died not too far away(Feb 2009). Scott from the Summer Cats has long been a friend and also a supporter during some bad OS touring experiences and he asked us to do it, and we are pleased to oblige of course. Not sure what will be on it from the others as we haven't heard it yet.

There's three(!) new albums on the way too? How is this even possible? What form do they take and when can we expect to hear them?

How is it possible they haven't come out 5 years ago is more the question! But stuff happens in life and sometimes you cannot get what you would like done unfortunately.

Well there is one album we recorded a few years ago which we are not so sure about and may come out in the form of an EP maybe. There's some good songs but the band wasn't really together when recording and we didn't do that great a job. The sound is sort of arty barbecue like I guess...

Second album we recorded with Explosion Robinson in New York and he is working on this but is so busy it will take a while. I expect it will be well worth the wait as he is a whiz to put it mildly. There's some pretty good songs on that one.

Then...there is the album we recorded just before Christmas known as LAWN 2 (Love Affair With Nature 2) which was recorded with Francesca Bussey and David Nichols and James Dutton - people we have played with on older recordings. They are coming this weekend to work on that one and get most of the overdubs done we hope.

I won't even go on about the 40 tracks we recorded with Stewart Anderson a number of years ago which are sitting on an old Mac and one day we hope will be finished off if technology can reach back that far in time.

And you're playing Indietracks! That's going to be amazing. Have you been before or heard about it? It's quite the most perfect festival ever.

It looks pretty fabulous. I was supposed to be back in Sydney well before then but pleaded to get the trip extended as it looked good and something unusual and the chance mightn't come again. It is so long since I have spent any time in England it will be odd. I lived in London for a year once and spent quite a bit of time in Nottingham and when I went back to Australia I was so miserable and thought I had made a bad choice by coming home . I recovered long ago of course but it will be good to be back even if for a short while.

And tell us a little about 'Short Poppy Syndrome' the Cannanes documentary. Were the band involved in the making of it all? The UK premier is coming up right? Didn't you design a Converse trainer too? How on earth did that come about?

We were only involved in the making of the film by being in it I think . With some dreadful hairstyles etc on my part I remember. The film makers moved on to other things so it was never quite finished but will have a showing in Newcastle with live performance and we hope may be able to come out with a Best Of compilation

We were going to put out a Best Of in the near future but Stephen said last week he is so excited by the new recordings we have to wait to see what should go on there from then.

The film is by turns funny and rather embarrassing but what can you do? It is the past. I hope it makes sense to people who don't know the band.

The shoe - Well Converse asked us to contribute to 100 artists designing shoes and we got Davo as we knew he would do a good job. They are a pretty impressive shoe I have to say and I don’t give a toss about shoes normally

Let's go back to the beginning. How did The Cannanes form? You (Frances) were a founder member right? How did the hook up with Calvin and K come about?

Despite being around since 1985 it is often pointed out cruelly to me that I am NOT a founding member. You know I can't remember but its all at www.cannanes.com- Here's a sample

"The Cannanes really began as an imaginary band of David Nichols, featuring friends Annabel Bleach and Michelle Cannane. The fiction sort of became reality when David moved to Sydney from Melbourne in Oct. '84. This lineup did not really change until early '85, but Michelle was rarely available, besides which, none of the members could actually play instruments. However in December one song was recorded with these 3 involved

Annabel and David had written some lyrics, notably "The Cannanes"(later changed to "Tales of the Brave Cannanes" to suit their fixation with 60's supergroup Cream "Ode to Cream " (aka "Shower Scene Backstage at the Fillmore"): Stephen ONeil who lived across the road had written music, or so he claimed, and so one afternoon in December the four rehearsed in the 'family room' at 202. At this session they composed and recorded "The Cannanes" and "Ode to Cream" (one rendition of which featured a guest performance from "Triffid" Alsy MacDonald), the same versions now found at the beginning of "Rarities". This is the first time Annabel sang in the group. David was too nervous to play. Many songs were composed over this 3 month period, sometimes with and sometimes without Fran.Gibson Towards the end of the band's usage of this title, Stephen, Annabel and David recorded the 12 copies of the cassette single "Life"/"It's Hardly Worth It" individually. 3 shops were chosen to sell 3 copies each. Covers were individually made.

Then Fran, Stephen, Annabel, David and Michelle combined to record what was to become "The Cannanes Came Across With The Goods." It was to be a C30 cassette, side one beginning with "Hell & Back" and side two with "Sunday". "Bone " was to be excluded as it was cut off half way through. Many more songs had been composed including "Happy Was A Fly", "Skeleton is your Little Boy", "You're So Groovy", "Sunday" and "Gloom Turns to Boom" (pt.2).

The line-up in the Cannanes Mk. 2 was usually Annabel, David, Stephen, and Fran more often than not. A,D + S had busking forays in the streets of Sydney, including one marathon outside the Hellenic Hall recalled here by David's brother -

"In 1985 I was 16 years old. I was studying year 11 biology at high school. My main interests were gardening and golf. Something has changed in the intervening period... At easter time of that year my sister and I visited David in Sydney. His house had a tabloid newspaper poster in the kitchen which said "Skeleton is your little boy". On Saturday night there was some kind of benefit concert at the Hellenic Hall in Abercrombie St. with lots of punk bands playing. The Cannanes took two guitars and a drum, some cider and Tamsin and me and set up a sign outside saying "the Cannanes play 40 of their greatest hits" (or something like that). Not much money or interest was raised, but I do seem to remember an ugly drunken couple dirty-dancing (ahead of their time) to some tune or other, accompanied by Annabel's taunts. It took me a bit more than all this to convince me that The Cannanes were a 'band' but it was a start."

Calvin and David were/are pen pals. We played with him on recent Australian tour.

What's the line-up of the band at the moment? I believe you have a kind of rotating cast of oddball geniuses currently.

I don’t know about genii but David Nichols and Francesca Bussey and James Dutton are doing stuff and we hope others like Stewart Anderson and Shintaro Kiyonari and Guy Blackman and of course Explosion Robinson will in the future,

It will be just Stephen O'Neil and I in the UK and we hope to have help from Sarandon folk on bass and drums for a couple of songs.

You're heavily involved with the campaign to save small live music venues in Australia. What's the situation with that at the moment? Is there some kind of petition our thousands (cough) of readers can sign?

There was a great march in Melbourne-Basically it is about the usual- gentrification and people not wanting music in their areas and also badly thought out legislation trying to curb alcohol fuelled violence which doesn’t even happen in most original music venues, but laws were passed requiring bouncers even for a pub with an acoustic guitarist in it and forcing live music to stop at 12 pm and even earlier. And charging very expensive licence fees.

There is a petition I have signed but not sure about online. You know anyway - Think globally, act locally - so you readers go and make sure you look after music in your town!

What are The Cannanes listening to at the moment? Have you heard Milk Teddy, the band that Scott Summer Cats has been producing? We like them.

No haven’t heard Milk Teddy. I have been listening to some music from some surfing people - Windy Hill from Byron Bay and a reissue of the Chads Tree albums and stuff from Canadian songwriters James Keelaghan & Hugh McMillan - kind of folky - and Djan Djan who are : Mamadou Diabate, Bobby Singh & Jeff Lang whom I saw on the weekend, and I bought that Grizzly Bear album, and I had a ridiculous Stevie Nicks phase for a while

Tell us a secret.

I saw the Pixies and they were bad. Is that a secret? A real secret is that we haven’t played since one night in Mexico City in 2008 and I am rather scared about our shows in the UK.

Do you have any tattoos?

Nuh. I can't think of anything I would want indelibly written on me. I did think for a second I could have the word Newtown (where I lived and am about to live again in Sydney) once but I would never bother. Pain is to be avoided in my world. Most tattoos are a bit pathetic I have to say but I don't care if others want them. I am surprised they are still in fashion though.

Thanks to everyone who joined us in celebrating él records and the release of the Blueboy re-issues. Our guest Dominic played lots and lots of good records and we'll have his playlist up on the blog shortly. Then Mr Wright, looking sharp as hell, played a truly wonderful set, his voice during Tomorrow Not Today transforming the Buffalo Bar to a velvety cocktail bar. And then Chocolate Barry, sadly one guitarist down, played a funfilled dancey set. It was truly awesome to hear classic songs like Popmusic Crazy and I Cry Because Of You Argentina live. They also played a stunning version (a Monochrome Set version I've been told) of Primal Screams 'Velocity Girl'. And last and not least thank to everyone who danced afterwards and stayed and had a fun time. Hope to see you all on may 14th again!

Girls Names: Don't Let Me In (Captured Tracks 12" EP)

Judging by past releases Girls Names are huge fans of Beat Happening, but here they also crib a little bit of Crystal Stilts reverb-and-jangle, to fine affect. Title track 'Don't Let Me In' breezes by in a woozy kind of a way, sounding not unlike a more relaxed Veronica Falls, but 'Graveyard' is the real stand-out here; with Cathal T Cully's Calvin Johnson-esque vocals wrapped around a chiming, Flying Nun riff (as seems to be all the rage at Captured Tracks these days) and lots of nice, atmospheric echo. Somehow both epic and restrained, this comes highly recommended. And they're from Belfast, not Brooklyn! And the cover is dead nice! What more do you want?

Tiger Tape

Admittedly, upon initially hearing rumours of the suicide-slash-rebirth of Moofish Catfish as Tiger Tape, I was a bit skeptical in this new direction the girls wanted to take up. What would happen if their preciously unique sound got lost in transition?

Well, what happened was this: Agnes, Emilia, Kristina, and Wågis jumped into a car and drove five hours into Swedish woods to record a brilliantly ace new album: I Woke Up in Hökarängen.

The sound is more mature and confident - still the lyrics remain slightly naïve and gender-confused, yet a bit less awkward. The guitars are slightly heavier and the keyboards more melodic. Agnes' voice is not as shouty, yet remains raw and cherished. Emotionally, it's like being able to ride your favourite rollercoaster over and over on a rainy empty day at a theme park. Addictive.

Is this what waking up in Hökarängen feels like?

Okay, so there are some criticisms to the phrase Tiger Tape contributing to confusion of Tender Tiger Trap (not to mention being a difficult Google search!), but come on - at least the name remains feline based and the aforementioned references are great anyway. Another pro: now I can selfishly cherish my Moofish Catfish tote bag as a collector's item!

The album is out on April 16th, celebrated with a party in Stockholm by Cosy Recordings. A tour of Germany and a summer of festivals to follow!

Thus, Tiger Tape is more of an evolution rather than a start from scratch. A step forward, indeed!

Oh, and speaking of which, here's a little Easter present.

Thanks to everyone who came out last night, enjoyed the bands, nibbled on cookies and twiglets, and spilt a few drinks on the dancefloor!

We had soo much fun: Betties did a fantastic fringe-shaking set, dreamy performance from Twig included a brand new Saxophone player and Ville of Cats on the drums, and of course the mighty Cats on Fire stole many indiepop hearts and graced us with a double encore!

The highlight of my evening was dancing with Ian HDIF to Cats' cover of White Town's 'Your Woman' and after having a dance with Mattias to the original version!

Hello Sourpatch, discovering your band helped make 2009 a great year for me, and your wonderful hit single 'I Want You Either Way' made my Top 20 Songs list. What were your favourite songs, LPs, new bands, popshows of 2009?

Rich: My favourites of 2009 were Leaving Mornington Crescent, new Magrudergrind LP, Roskopp, Superbad (R.I.P), Fleabag, new Pants Yell LP, Grass Widow records.

Nicole: New Julie Doiron, the new Rose Melberg.

Christine: Raincoats reissue, Mirah, Brilliant Colors, Screaming Females, Songs for Moms.

Mander: Pains of Being Pure at Heart LPs.

And what does 2010 hold for the band? Any new records? World tour? We'd love to see you come to the UK and there's a Baby Honey gig waiting for you if you want it!

Mander: Robo tripping.

Nicole: More videos, new recordings, and spring tour with Fleabag!

Rich: We have enough to make another LP so hopefully something/anything new on vinyl and we'd love to go to England, but probably not till next year, can anyone help?

Your sound reminds me of some of my favourite bands ever; Velocity Girl, Spinanes, Tiger Trap and Go Sailor! particularly. Were these important groups for you? Any more influences we should know about?

Rich: Wow! Ummmm...yea, they are important, we have so many influences it would take a whole storybook to name 'em all, but here are some more...

Nicole: Mazzy Star, The Cranberries, Gayle Garnett, Victory at Sea, Pam Berry.

Mander: Billie Holiday, Henry's Dress, Crass, Cub.

Christine: Kate Bush, Boyracer, The Raincoats, Aisler Set, Odetta, Bessie Smith, Patti Smith, Chrissy Hynde, Amelia Fletcher, Janet Weiss.

Rich: Superchunk, Undertones, anything Tracy Thorn, Allison Statton, The Wipers, The Lemonheads, Mary Lou Lord, That Dog, KIT, Dear Nora, this list could go on a lot longer!

Crushin' is a nigh-on perfect debut LP, any plans to release it in the UK? The shipping costs are crazy!

Mander: That would be awesome!!

Rich: If anyone offered we'd probably do that..hint hint!

The video for 'IWYEW' is ace and makes me want to pack a bag and head for California every time I watch it. What's the 'scene' like in San Jose? Is it a big Indiepop town? Any other local bands you'd like to recommend?

Rich: I honestly think we don't know or fit in to a lot of the local indiepop scene. I would like to play with a lot more pop bands but we tend to stick to a more punk/d.i.y side of the bay area. No dis, it's just that we aren't very clean cut in looks or sound.

Christine: The indie pop scene as it's defined here is more radio friendly. and when I say that I mean that the sound is more like the newest Built to Spill or Modest Mouse or new Stereolab; bands that are well known but still have roots and connections in the indie scene. The sound that we like to play is more punk than it is pop, or at least we'd like to think so.

Rich: The bay area scene is very hit or miss, we usually have more fun at small house shows than at legitimate venues so we try to play those more. Some great bands to check out; Opt Out, Fischer, Trouble, Trainwreck Riders, Ovens, Young Offenders.

Mander: Fleabag, Godstomper, Songs for Moms.

Nicole: Ugly Winner.

Christine: Grass Widow, Brilliant Colors, Albert Square, Forever ( who live in Portland now), Younger Lovers.

Not many people actually read our blog at the moment, so we're trying to bribe people to come visit by giving them free stuff. Do you have anything knocking around on mp3 we could shove in their direction if we make them promise to buy the LP?

Rich: Umm, well the only thing we have is this acoustic version of a song that nicole had recorded to show us all.

Christine: We recorded it with all of us but it got cut on the record, maybe it'll be on a comp in the future!?

Rich: You have a pancake day? Do your pancakes mean the same as ours?

Mandi: Go bananas for pancakes!

Christine: It's actually national pancake day here in the US on Feb 23rd, but I'm a waffle person myself.

Tell us a secret.

Rich: If Nicole drinks and smokes weed at the same time she freezes up like a vegetable and is scared of everything! It's pretty ridiculous.

Mandi: Plus she has four nipples. No joke.

Do you have any tattoos?

Rich: Yea, that's a weird one; I have two roses, two x's, a wooly mammoth/reaper sleeve on my left arm, a noise symbol on the other arm (I also play in a grind band - like Napalm Death), the words "empty head" above both of my wrists and a local vegetarian restaurant's logo on my other wrist (I got it on a tour as a joke - the joke is on me.)

Nicole: Red wagon, ice cream cone, k records logo, Rose Melberg tour poster logo (the one with the jumping boy.)

Christine: A replica of a tattoo my dad gave himself when he was 12, it's a rising sun but people think its a taco, a tarot card image meaning strength, the same Rose Melberg tatoo as Nicole (it was meant to be a friendship tattoo but she got hers 6 months later), and the words "though the return be never" on my forearm. It's from the Langston Hughes poem "No Regrets."

Mandi: A king on a bike on my thigh, I have 2 "W"'s tattooed on each butt cheek so when I do cartwheels it says "WOW MOM!" Hahaha!

Rich: Hahaha!

Christine: Hahaha!

Wild Nothing: Cloudbursting (Captured Tracks 7")

Here at Baby Honey Towers we hold up Kate Bush's 1985 masterwork Hounds Of Love as a bold example of pure pop perfection, an undeniably brilliant LP and a totem of absolute genius that should not be sullied by the hands of mere mortals (and yes Futureheads, we are talking to you here). However Wild Nothing's cover of the wonderful 'Cloudbursting' gets a pass. Why? Because it actually manages to out-weird the Queen of Weird herself, being as it is, a wonderfully gloopy, slo-mo-narco version with added drone and sine-wave. Like New Order trapped in a wind tunnel and ripped to the tits on plant food. Or something. Anyway you can listen to it here and order it here.

Sad Dad For Puppets: Again (Cloudberry 7")

I had the lovely Roque (head honcho of Cloudberry Records) staying on my couch for the duration of London Popfest and, upon leaving, he made me a gift of this, the latest 7" from Swedish newgazers Sad Day For Puppets. There's been some debate in P!OP! circles about whether the noiser, shoegaze inspired bands should really be considered indiepop at all, but I've always been a big fan of the genre and 'Again' is a cracking example, trading in the bands Dinosaur Jr-esque live energy for a more stately, elegiac feel. A mini-epic then, and therefore a far better leaving present than a boring bottle of wine. Cheers Roque! Download or order here.

Sambassadeur: Days (Labrador download only single)

This one came out a while back, but somehow passed me by until now. Imagine my delight then upon finding out that 'Days' is probably the best thing that Sambassadeur have ever done. An aching, gorgeous, nigh-on perfect orchestral pop song, with 'Dancing Queen' piano and soaring strings all layered over Anna Persson's astonishingly beautiful vocals. This wouldn't sound out of place on the last Camera Obscura record (or any Camera Obscura record come to that.) Download it from Labrador here. And pick up the LP too if you know what's good for you - it's a corker.

Meow Meow: I Wonder What Went Wrong (WIAIWYA free download)

The latest in Where It's At Is Where You Are's free download singles sees Liverpool's Meow Meow take centre stage. WIAIWYA reckon that 'I Wonder What Went Wrong' sounds like power-pop, Heavenly, All Girl Summer Fun Band and Tiger Trap, and they won't get much argument from me. The B-side is a charmingly evocative cover of Go Sailor's 'Ray Of Sunshine' on acoustic guitar, bongos and shaker, and you can get both tracks here.

The Lodger: Have A Little Faith In People (This Is Fake DIY download-only single)

The Lodger are back. And what's more they're back with a hugely infectious pop gem, with added brass! Sounding not a little unlike Billy Bragg's 'Sexuality' or even the Housemartins at their finest, this is an unashamedly mainstream sounding song, and all the better for it. It's the sort of thing that would have thousands of student union dancefloors shaking up and down the land if this was still 1986, and if this all sounds like a back-handed compliment, then it's not meant to be, 'Have A Little Faith In People' more than transcends it's influences and, if there was any justice in the world, would go on to be a huge hit in the pop charts proper. B-Side 'TV Guide' is a perfectly acceptable slice of Sunshine/Bubblegum Pop, but the flip 'Your Timetable' is simply excellent, managing to sound like both a lost New Wave/Powerpop classic and 'Psychocandy'-era JAMC at the same time. Is the Flying Nun label becoming more of an influence on Brooklyn bands than even, say, Black Tambourine? To my ears there's always been a strain of Dunedin Sound DNA buried within the layers of fuzz and scree that make up The Crystal Stilts wall of noise, and now here's Beach Fossils - coming on like a cross between early Clean and 'Pink Frost'-era Chills. Their new single on Captured Tracks is called 'Daydream' and already sounds like a minor indie classic beamed back from New Zealand circa 1986.

Hello Smittens! I'm interviewing you because your wonderful cover of the Just Joans 'What Do We Do Now' (from your seven inch split EP on Wee Pop!) made my Top 20 Songs of 2009 list. How does it feel to be in receipt of such an overwhelming accolade?

Well that was some great company to be in. And clearly we couldn't have done it without the genius song they wrote.

And how did that collaboration come about? Were you good friends with the Joans beforehand? Can we expect similar projects in the future? Maybe with Transmittens?

We wanted to cover one of their songs after we saw them play the first time in Glasgow. We were on the books to release a single on WeePOP records, and invited them to join us because we enjoy gimmicky symmetry and of course we wanted to hear what their cover of one of our songs would sound like, and, lucky for us, they were game. As far as future collaborations go, there's nothing currently on the books, but you never know.

Similarly, what are The Smittens favourite songs (or popshows or LPs) of 2009? You don't have to do twenty, I know that you're busy people.

The Littlest Smitten says her favorite pop show was seeing Gordon M. from Ballboy playing in the church at Indietracks.

The Charming Smitten says: The Middle Ones at London popfest, Suburban Kids in San Fran (the night after the SF popfest) or the POBPAH Valentines show in Burlington, VT.

The Greek one says: San Fransisco Popfest final Tullycraft show

The Lady Smitten says: I fell in love with Cats on Fire last summer at Cosy Den.

And the Dashing says: The Would-be-Goods at Twee as Fuck last February, Burning Hearts in Stockholm, Speedmarket Avenue at Indietracks, Just Joans at the Nottingham all-dayer in November. I've been addicted to all these bands' records this year.

Your performance at Indietracks last summer was one of the highlights of the year for us here at Baby Honey Towers. Any other favourite moments of 2009?

3 Smittens got married a week apart in 2009 (two of them to each other). It was really the year of doing everything we dared ourselves to do. Also finally touring Sweden--better known as the Magic Kingdom of Indiepop.

And what does 2010 hold for the band? New records? Are you coming back to the UK? Can we book you? We'll start stockpiling the Newcastle Brown.

Yes, yes, and yes please. Though Colin still hasn't gotten over the fact that they don't have Newcastle on tap in Newcastle. 2010 holds some time in the studio recording a new album, the release of our addition to the Tullycraft Covers compilation (put out by LA Tool & Die), the release of our latest album, The Coolest Thing About Love on vinyl, a cover of a Cars Can Be Blue song for the HHBTM 10 year anniversary compilation, and for sure, a UK and European Tour. We are also confirmed to play NYC popfest and Indietracks, and have been invited back to play Cosy Den as well.

How is Vermont? Is there much of an indiepop 'scene' going on in Burlington? Are you aware of the British band called Vermont? They were pretty good actually.

We love Vermont. As far as indie pop goes, we are currently sitting in a room with 80% of the indiepop people in this state (it would be 90% if Max was here). There is a big indie community here in Burlington, VT but it spans a variety of genres and media--artists, farmers, dancers, folk musicians, bakers, and more. It's an amazingly creative, conscious, and beautiful little place and we totally feed off that and hopefully give something back as well.

We're big fans of Wee Pop! and think that Camila is, like, totally rad, but can you tell her to stop making the packaging for the 3" CD-Rs so pretty? Sometimes it's heartbreaking to have to open them and spoil such beautiful design.

First off, Camila is the bees knees! You've seen her cd artwork; what you don't know is that she makes a mean veggie lasagna and is the best host in all of the UK! If you buy two of every release, you wouldn't have to worry about whether your only copy got ripped.

When I cack-handedly attempted to interview you and The Pocketbooks last time we met, you mentioned that you very much enjoyed discovering some particularly British delicacies such as Marmite and Newcastle Brown Ale. In the spirit of cultural exchange, are there any US or Vermont-based

foodstuffs us Brits should know about?

We have really good locally brewed beer here in VT. And great local cheese. and obviously there are those guys Ben and Jerry. You might want to check out spelt pretzels, fluffernutter sandwiches, half and half in your coffee, and when in New York, Dominican breakfasts of yellow rice, black beans, and eggs (with a side of fried sweet plantains). PS don't be fooled by the Canadians: Vermont maple syrup is the best. In fact, it's nearly sugaring season.

We can be real bitches. If we're on stage and all wearing stripes, it's not actually a coincidence...

Allo Darlin': Dreaming (Fortuna Pop!)

Known to anyone who has seen the band play live recently as 'the one with Monster Bobby' this is a gorgeous, world-weary duet, propelled by dreamy lap-steel and the beautiful harmonies provided by the intermingling of Elizabeth Darlin's crystal clear voice and Bobby's more sonorous tones. In songwriting terms, the arrangement and structure provoke memories of the (sorely-missed) Lucksmiths, but the vocals are pure Indiepop Nancy & Lee. Heart-stoppingly pretty.

No release date yet (as far as I could tell) but you can hear it here. And here's the video, which is so good it even manages to make Piccadilly Circus look like a nice place!

Bonne Idée: A Dream Of You (Cloudberry 7" 1015)

Bonne Idee have made some of the most fragile and beautiful pop music it's been my privilege to listen to over the last couple of years, and 'A Dream Of You' is no exception; being a thing of downbeat, understated elegance.

Imbued with a particularly Swedish melancholy, it's gossamer-thin and sounds like it may fall apart at any moment - but in a good way. A very good way.

Black Tambourine reform (sort of)! Record new tracks (sort of)!

Black Tambourine have revealed in an interview with Washington City Paper that they have completed four (four!) new recordings for an upcoming compilation album. The tracks consist of two originals; 'Lazy Heart' and 'Tears Of Joy' plus covers of Suicide's 'Dream Baby Dream' and Buddy Holly's 'Heartbeat'.

Blimey.

'Orange Paw' was one of those songs that became an instant favourite the first time you heard it. The soundtrack to a summer, it lead me to Afternoon Naps debut LP Sunbeamed, and a huge popcrush was developed. In 2009 the band repeated the trick with the outstanding single 'Mitten Fingers' (which made my Top 20 songs of the year) and subsequent album Parade. Here, co-songwriter/singer-in-chief Tom, answers a few questions...

Baby Honey: Hello Naps! What are The Afternoon Naps songs (or LPs, or popshows) of the year?

AN: Last year my absolute favourite song was "Christmas Island" by Lake. Followed closely by "Horoscope" from Cats on Fire, the LPs by both bands were great too. The POBPAH is an obvious one, but classic nonetheless. Mostly I listen to more older stuff, obscure soul and pop psych 45s, and 80's jangle get top billing in my stereo usually, Dee Dee Warwick, Tammi Terrell type stuff.

BH: And what does 2010 hold for The Naps? Last time we met you drove us across a big bridge in a van with no brakes; do you have any plans for further death-defying stunts?

AN: Ha! yes driving across the Williamsburg bridge with you at 4am in our brakeless van is one of my life's favourite moments. I will never ever forget that. Anyhow.....In 2010 we have lots of cool things happening. We're actually playing a show with Ronnie Spector this week! She's one of my idols and never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that would happen. Other than that I think we're looking at a bunch of small releases, some split 7"s and a 12" EP for sure. We'd like to tour this summer and fall too.

BH: When are you coming to the UK? Can we book you now? You can stay in our houses, drink tea and eat marmite on toast whilst watching The Bill, it'll be ace.

AN: I want to get us to the UK soon. I'm hoping the situation presents itself and is do-able financially, too. It's pretty expensive for a tiny band like us but, if we can get some help getting over there, then absolutely yes. The label was trying to maybe set one up this summer but not sure if it's gonna happen yet or not. Pencil me in for tea and marmite, I'll make it happen somehow.

BH: You've kindly allowed us to make 'Mitten Fingers' downloadable for our readers (or at least you haven't asked us to take it down yet), anything else knocking around on mp3 we could give them if they promise to go buy the album?

AN: I've attached a rare acoustic home demo of Orange Paw. I'm pretty sure you'll be into that!

BH: How's Cleveland? We haven't been there yet, but I imagine that you guys spend you days hanging out with Bears and making music in your basement. Is that close? Do you have day jobs? Where's the best place to get take-out? How are the Browns doing this year?

AN: Cleveland is hanging in there. We've got Craig from Bears playing drums for us now and we practice in his basement so YES your assumption is right on. Sadly, yes we all have day jobs. Our band consists of two teachers, a spa therapist, and a receptionist. Take out from Melt, an all grilled cheese restaurant cannot be beat! And the Browns, well if you know anything about Cleveland sports, is that it's a pretty dismal affair most years... but we love them unconditionally I guess.

BH: Tell us a secret.

AN: We're working on a secret set of covers only to be played at parties and encores.

BH: Do you have any tattoos?

AN: As far as I know only one of us has one - that's Leia - and it's of Pee Wee Herman's face. No joke.. she's a big fan.

King and the Olive Fields release debut single!

We first saw King and The Olive Fields when they came and played Twee As F**k and instantly fell for their beautifully constructed uke-folk. So it was with great joy that we learned that the band will be self-releasing their debut 10" EP 'Fireworks' on Monday 22nd February. It will be available in a number of record shops and a special limited edition will be on sale exclusively at Puregroove. You can also pre-order the single from the band's myspace.

The band will also be launching the EP with a show at The Duke of Uke on Friday February 12th; and anyone going along to that will be able to get in to Baby Honey later that night for the discounted price of £2!

(How Does It Feel To Be Loved?)

This fine Finnish lot never ceases to amaze, especially with the year’s offering of Our Temperance Movement. With a mixture of bizarre romanticism and odd cynicism, this album whooshes through emotions, lead by Mattias’ flowing vocals and remarkable lyrics (thank goodness for those sleeve inserts!). Perfect soundtrack for occasions ranging from a springtime drive in the country to a winter’s hibernation session in your room to watching your mum dance around silly in the summertime (the latter being a FACT). And let’s not fail to mention the fantastic performance by those Cats at this year’s Indietracks, including the spectacular cover of White Town’s ‘Your Woman’. Thank heavens for that. Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
Yes it's the obvious one. But how could it not be? Released at the start of the year The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart's debut LP has probably been the record I've listened to most over the past twelve months and I'm still not bored of it. Fresh sounding, with immaculate pop nous and, probably most importantly, an unashamed sense of fun, this record is a modern classic that more than justified the hype.

Best compilations

Yeti Magazine issue 7 and 8 (Yeti Publishing)

Yeti is really more of a book than a magazine and with every issue you get an absolutely amazing collection of rare and unreleased track by bands like Ty Segall, Fergus & Geronimo, Vaselines, the Great Unwashed, Fresh & Onlys. I've discovered loads of bands through these compilations and I urge you to get a copy as soon as you can. Highly recommended.

va - World's Lousy With Ideas Vol. 8 LP (Almost Ready Records)

Almost Ready have released these compilations since 2006 and I would almost like to include volumes 1-7 as well as I didn't discover them until this year and they have tracks of almost all the bands I really liked this year. All contain fantastic tracks by Tyvek, Times New Viking, Guinea Worms, Sic Alps and many more bands.

Best Albums
By the end of the year I honestly did think that where any great albums released in 2009 except for the PENS LP which blew away all the competition. Luckily I was proved wrong the last few days of the year so here are 5 more albums I really like

Home Blitz - Out Of Phase (Ritchie)
I hadn't hear about Home Blitz until my friend Martin procclaimed that it was the best album of the year sometime early December while I was gearing up to DJ at the mighty Upset The Rhythm club in London. The first song I took to was 'Is Anybody There?' (which ended up on my best tracks of 2009 list) with it's Daniel Johnston-y take on the Byrds but I kept listening to the album, even though I'm one of those who falls in love with one song and then mostly forgets about the rest, but for every repeated listen it grew on me with it's super naive take on... well Pop and Pop lyrics. Much like the PENS, Home Blitz sounds like they, actually he as Daniel Dimaggio seems to be the only member, stumbled upon some instruments while being home and bored and a tape recorder just happened to be in the room. The CD's been out for a while but the LP just came out so go order it right away. There is also an extensive interview here with Home Blitz.

The Fresh And Onlys - Grey-Eyed Girl (Woodsist)
A great album through and through and actually the second (or maybe even third as there seems to be a cassette that's somehow avoided my grasp) they released this year. But this is the one to get if you like your songs filled with pop melodies and great lyrics. 'I'm Gonna Be Your Elevator' is the lost little sister to Speeding Motorcycle

Times New Viking - Born Again Revisited (Matador)

Another great album that took a while to get into. 'Move To California' was the song that kept me warm during the cold snowy London days but tracks like 'No Time, No Hope', 'Hustler, Psycho, Son' and 'City On Drugs' kept dragging me back to this great album.

Chain And The Gang - Down With Liberty... Up With Chains! (K)
It's a bit uneven in places but this album by Ian Svenonius of Make-Up has some really great songs. 'Unpronouncable Name' is quite frankly fucking awesome but there are other songs like 'What Is A Dollar?', 'Deathbed Confession' and of course the 'Interview With The Chain Gang' that lift this album.

The Bobby McGees, Tender Trap and Would-Be-Goods all put on brilliant sets so thanks for playing for us and most of all thank you our lovely guests for dancing the night away. Hello there,

We are a sparkling new monthly Indiepop night that takes place on the second Friday of the month at Buffalo Bar in Islington, London. Some of us were involved with Twee As Fuck, whilst the rest of us ran the highly respected So Tough! So Cute! club in Sweden. In the past we've put on popshows featuring the likes of The Pastels, The Primitives, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Camera Obscura, The Lucksmiths and The Crystal Stilts plus many others! Come join us for some boozy dancing, twirly dresses, freckled faces and the best bands indiepop has to offer!
